Music Monday: Relaxing albums

Yes, I actually did it. It's time for Music Monday! It was kind of a stressful and crappy week for me, since Andrew had a root canal on Thursday and has been hurting ever since and I had a few frustrating and disappointing days at work. That's why I thought the theme of this first Music Monday should be relaxing music you can listen to when you need to calm down or unwind.

Most of these are entire albums; however, I've included a few individual songs I've added to my playlist over time that I absolutely love. Enjoy!
  • Somewhere in Time soundtrack: I know there are mixed feelings about this movie (though I happen to love it). But regardless of whether you can't get past the bizarre story line, you have to concede that the music from this movie is absolutely stunning. It makes me wish I played the violin, and it's haunting and comforting at the same time. If you don't already own this soundtrack, I highly recommend it -- and it's less than $10 on Amazon right now! My favorite track that I could listen to over and over is "Is He the One." You'll be captivated, I promise.
  • Pride and Prejudice soundtrack: Again, there are people who don't love the 2005 version with Keira Knightley. But the sweeping piano music, played masterfully by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, is so peaceful and so appropriate for a Jane Austen movie. This is another must-have album, even if you just want something different to listen to on a Sunday. Also, if you play the piano, the sheet music is pretty easy and you feel like you just stepped out in gloves and a pinafore when you play it (or maybe that's just me). One tip: If you want to add this to an instrumental playlist, take "The Militia Marches In" out. It's a short track with snare drums and can break the peaceful mood. Also, be sure to listen to my favorite track, "Liz On Top of the World." It's fabulous.
  • December by George Winston: This is technically a Christmas album, but I actually listen to it year-round because it's so peaceful -- and it doesn't really sound like a Christmas album unless you're listening for it. That probably makes no sense. It's just very subtle and understated, but it's beautiful. Buy this album, and you'll be incredibly happy for years to come. Seriously. My favorite tracks are "Thanksgiving" and "Carol of the Bells," but they're all great. P.S. The song "Lullaby," from his album Summer, is also worth a listen.
  • "Comptine d'un autre été, l'après-midi" from the Amelie soundtrack: The film Amelie (edited, of course) is one of my absolute favorites, and the soundtrack is stellar as well. While the majority of the soundtrack isn't exactly relaxing -- it contains a lot of French accordion music -- the "Comptine d'un autre" piece is incredible. I seriously think it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It's ethereal and romantic and satisfying. If you don't listen to any of the other songs, make sure you listen to this one. I can't speak highly enough of it.
Those are just a few of my favorites. I hope they allow you to make a stressful day more relaxing. Which albums help you unwind? I'm always looking for great new songs and am excited to read your comments!

  1. I recently watched "Somewhere in Time" and I agree that the soundtrack is beautiful. And the "P&P" soundtrack is amazing! Definitely one I should buy. I like to create playlists for specific tasks, so I actually have a playlist that's for when I'm writing. LOL I will admit to being distracted by it at times (because it's so good!). Tonight I've been listening to Air Supply's Definitive Collection. Old school, but gosh they're great! :)
