Music Monday: Lullabies

Hi, friends! I just got back from a jam-packed weekend in Idaho (that I will explain more about later), but I wanted to share a quick Music Monday focused on lullabies. I don't have children yet, but I already have a running list of songs I plan to play for/sing to them when I do have them.

In fact, I'm considering making a playlist for my friend Brittany, whose baby is three months old, because I played a few songs from my "Sleepy" playlist when we were driving with them and baby Brighton was screaming -- and she promptly fell asleep. I'd like to think it was the lullabies, but who knows with babies. :)
  • "Lullabye" by Billy Joel: This is one of my all-time favorite songs. The lyrics are perfect, the piano music is soothing and it's the sweetest song written by a father to his daughter.
  • "Godspeed" by The Dixie Chicks: Seriously, WHY have the Dixie Chicks not released a new album yet? Are they broken up? Anyone know? This song is so sweet and comforting. I can't wait to sing it to my own baby.
  • "Angel Standing By" by Jewel: If you've seen the movie Return to Me (which I also recommend), you've heard this song. Jewel has the most beautiful, clear voice, and this song shows off her incredible range. It's so relaxing and perfect for playing to a baby.
  • "Moon River" by Patty Griffin: I know I've mentioned this song on this blog before, but I absolutely adore Patty Griffin's voice and "Moon River." It doesn't get any better than this.
  • "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor: Most every James Taylor song would be perfect for soothing a snuggly baby, but this one is especially meaningful to me because it's gotten me through some really hard times. I could listen to it over and over again and never tire of it.
  • "Love Me Tender" by Norah Jones: I know Elvis made this popular, but Norah Jones (my idol -- I seriously want to be her) made it sweet, soft and romantic. Bonus: I can already play and sing this on the guitar, because it's so simple!
  • "Lady in Spain" by Ingrid Michaelson: The words to this song are so cute, and I actually love the acoustic version better than the original on her "Be OK" album. It's just a lovely song.
  • "Hushabye Mountain" by Stacey Kent: Full disclosure? I just barely discovered this artist when I googled this song to find the original version from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, so I have no idea what the rest of her music is like. But I loved her version of this song! It's so peaceful. This is definitely my favorite song from that movie, and one I'd love to learn on the piano or guitar. The ukulele would be awesome for it, too.
Have I missed any great lullabies? I know Jewel has a great CD focused on lullabies that I'd love to check out, too.

  1. Bon iver, beach house, and the Amelie soundtrack work! Anything calming works!

  3. Isn't it great, Courtney? That song is just so peaceful. I actually love most of the music from that movie. It's a bizarre film, but fun at the same time.
