Homeless

Andrew will tell you that I am a big softie and can no longer carry cash around because I give it to all of the homeless people I see. Unfortunately, that's not the best idea for our budget, and it's not always the best for someone who is homeless, either.

That's why I got stoked about this great idea on a blog I follow, I Am Momma - Hear Me Roar: put together survival kits for people who are struggling! The writer didn't give a lot of details about it, so Andrew and I went to Walmart the other night and picked out stuff to make a few of our own.

Excuse the lame picture. It was 11 at night and I was tired and didn't feel like actually laying it out somewhere to take a good photo.

We bought two boxes of granola bars, some packaged cheese and crackers, packs of tissues, small bottles of water, bars of soap, individual first aid kits, gum and a little travel-size package that included a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss. Then we bought cheap gallon-size plastic bags and put everything inside.

I'm going to keep some bags in my car for the right occasion. Andrew is really good about buying homeless people food when he sees them outside restaurants downtown, but this will be an easy way for both him and I to serve.

If you plan on making some, be sure to put the soap in a small plastic bag before you put it in the big one. Let's just say that an unfortunate incident at college with soap in the same drawer as a bag of Hershey's kisses has taught me the dangers of mixing soap and food.

Also, I would have liked to include a comb or a brush in these, but Walmart was out of individual combs when we were there. I may add some if I can find some in the next few days.

I'll keep you posted on whether I'm able to give the bags away! I'm really excited about this and just wanted to share. :)

  1. Great idea. I'd throw in a few pass along cards too. :)
